Death at a Diner A Murder in Milburn Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Nancy McGovern Renee Brame McGovern Books Books Reviews

Why on earth would this dark book be called a cozy.? If you read cozies, you know what I mean. Did it keep my interest? Yes. Did it have engaging characters? NO! Did it have humorous moments? No. Lies twisted into deceit into revenge into needless death-not the definition of a cozy to me. I knew who the killer was long before the big reveal. To compound matters, the ending of the book just stopped. Just stopped. Did the author run out of room? Did she spend all her words? Did she leave things hanging so there could be a sequel? I won't be reading any more of this author's books.
Nancy McGovern has tried her hand at writing a cozy and she has found a fit. From the first chapter I was hooked. I was so intrigued when I read the blurb that when I had trouble downloading one version I went to and bought it and I am so glad I did.
This is a quick paced story. Nora comes back to her home town to follow her dream and ends up trying to prove that the killer of her best friend is a local and not drifter as the town wants her to believe.
The characters are deep enough to know them, yet I can't wait for the next book to find out more of their secrets.
There are a few editing mistakes but nothing glaring and nothing a fresh pair of eyes or two wouldn't catch.
Nora Newberry and best friend, Raquel Madden are just about to burst. Why? Because, they are finally opening their childhood-adulthood dream, The Madness Café.

The two girls had worked hard and long to get their funds together and purchase the diner. Nora didn't have nearly as much money saved as Raquel's $500K, but she was coming in as an equal partner due to her matching expenses and her talent as a Chef. Raquel was an Accountant.

Everything is golden for Nora. Her dream coming true in just three days, and a man, Harvey, a Real Estate talent had asked her for a date. As Harvey arrives in his Ferrari Testarossa, small town girl of Milburn, WY can't believe her new life.

The luck turns however, a suspicious car accident, attempted robberies, battery, and murder will find it's way into Nora's life. Her world will turn upside down and what is true and false will blend until Nora works to figure her life out, without Raquel by her side.

This was a very good debut novel in what is a romantic mystery series. As an added treat the author shares a short story entitled " A Bluebell Knopps Mystery Series The Locked Room Murder.

The Locked Room Murder involves a young woman achieving her majority (21st Birthday,) only to find our her ex-boyfriend (last night) is dead and she, herself, is a witch. The blue hair might have been a clue, but?

This bonus book was a fun and quick read. The mystery was well executed and kept you wondering how and who all through it. A series to look forward to.
Nora Newberry and Raquel Madden grew up together in Milburn, Wyoming, and have been best friends since grade school. Even though Nora moved away ten years ago to study and work in New York City and Boston, they've kept in touch weekly. Now Nora has returned home to fulfill her dream of opening a very special diner with her best friend after qualifying as a chef and saving every penny she could for a down payment towards the business. They are just a few days away from the grand opening of the Madness Diner, but when Nora finds her partner lying dead on the floor of the unopened diner, all of their plans come to a screeching halt.

I'll admit that I almost gave up on this book early on. The introduction of the two friends in the first chapter made them seem like flighty, immature, and not-too-bright teens at a slumber party with pet nicknames and gushing over a uniform design for their diner. Luckily, I stuck with it long enough to get past that and into the meat of the characters' backgrounds and then into the plot. (Although I almost bailed again a few chapters later when a little too much time was being spent on Raquel choosing Nora's attire for a date).

It was worth staying around for the well-plotted mystery.

There are connections between most of the characters of the book that go back to their high school days plus the supporting cast of townspeople who have known them all for most of their lives. Gossip, jealousy, greed, and lies all figure into the plot as layers of past relationships are uncovered as the clues are discovered. For those readers who prefer to solve the murder along with the characters, there are plenty here of the old-fashioned kind of questioning people and putting together puzzle pieces rather than forensics and technology related types of clues.

Supporting characters cover a wide range of types and personalities, each well described and serving a useful purpose to the story. There are lots from which to choose Nora's landlady, a retired teacher who acts more like a doting aunt, the mayor's two-faced wife, a shady racketeer, the sheriff who approaches the case with conflicting agendas, and a real estate entrepreneur who seems to have a split personality as he goes from concerned friend to cold businessman at the drop of a hat.

There are also some wobbly bits where the details of the plot are muddled or not clearly explained, but for a first self-published book, these aren't too numerous. Some things are minor such as referring to two siblings with the same father but different mothers as step-brothers instead of the correct term half-brothers, while other oversights are more related to plot events that have not been resolved or explained by the end of the book. Hopefully, they will be explored or an explanation offered for these in future installments of the series.

A recipe for a unique version of Shepherd's Pie that is described in the story is included at the end of the book.

Recommended. Be patient through the first few pages of the characters' silliness, and you will be rewarded with a satisfying mystery.
